1. ARCHITECTURE OF ARC DE TRIOMF

Arc de Triomf was designed by a famous Catalan architect, Josep Vilaseca i Casanovas, that also worked in the project of Casa Batlló.

This 30 meters high arch, in the design of Neo-Mudejar, was constructed of rock and stone, in terms of technicalities. The designs and friezes of the Arch represent various items. Next, at the front of the bridge facing the Passeig de Sant Joan, there has the deep contrast of “Barcelona welcoming the nations” and in the other side, we one can see the frieze that marks the granting of prizes and certificates to the winners.

The leaders of research and the arts (right) and farming and manufacturing (left) are on the hands. Finally looking at the perimeter of the arch, you may see a sequence of 49 shields which depict the various Spanish provinces. The use of the bricks as the key type of material characterizes the unique design form in which the arch is constructed.

The arch has Muslim design as a direct influence. The style is famous as “Mudéjar” which was established in the Iberian Peninsula throughout the 12th century.

This specific style was developed by Moors and Muslims who lived in the region after Christianity retaken and colonized the entire peninsula. The Muslim effect on design becomes very evident as you start paying attention to the bridge.
